Community
Garden Workshop Saturday May 8, 2010 9:00 to
11:00 AM Several local groups are partnering to offer an
introductory workshop on how to start a community garden for your
neighborhood, church or organization. The event is scheduled for Saturday
May 8 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the Ridge Point Church Moran Park Campus
located at 97 West 22nd Street in Holland. Light refreshments will be
served. The workshop will include the mechanics of operating a
community garden, planning your garden (layout, tools, soil
preparation, water needs, plants, and personnel), composting tips and highlights
from three local community gardens. Experts from the Greater Grand
Rapids Food Systems Council and the MSU Extension/Master Gardener
program will also be on hand to answer questions. Community
gardens offer access to fresh produce and plants, can improve
neighborhoods while providing a sense of community and connection to
the environment. Community gardens also encourage an urban
community's food security, allowing citizens to grow their own food or
for others to donate what they have grown. There are no fees for
the workshop but registration is required. Please send registrations to: greenwestmichigan@yahoo.com
with “Community Gardens Workshop” in subject line or call Ken
Freestone at 616.396.9910.
